Aikuma Indigo Dyes (Sukumo)
Sukumo is a premium traditional Japanese natural indigo produced using Sukumo, a fermented indigo made primarily in Tokushima Prefecture, Japan.
This centuries-old craft is renowned for producing some of the world's finest natural indigo.
Creating Sukumo is a labour-intensive process that typically takes around three months.
After harvesting, the indigo leaves are dried, crushed, carefully cleaned to remove stems, moistened, and repeatedly turned during a controlled fermentation process.
This traditional method transforms the leaves into a rich, natural indigo suitable for creating beautiful, long-lasting blue shades.
Today, only a small number of Sukumo producers remain.
This Sukumo is sourced from Mr. Sato, a highly respected Japanese craftsman who was recognised by the Japanese government in 1978 for his outstanding expertise in traditional Sukumo production.
Ideal for experienced natural dyers seeking authentic Japanese indigo and the timeless beauty of traditional fermentation dyeing.
Dyeing Instructions:
- Prepare an indigo vat by reducing the Sukumo using sodium hydrosulfite or another suitable reducing system with an alkaline agent, such as oak tree ash lye.
- For best results, prepare your dye bath using dechlorinated water. Chlorine can reduce the effectiveness of natural indigo.
-
- Leave tap water uncovered for at least 12 hours in direct sunlight or 24 hours indoors, or
- Boil the water for at least 10 minutes, then allow it to cool before use.
- Dye your prepared fibres by dipping them into the indigo vat, allowing the colour to oxidise between dips.
- Repeat dipping and oxidation until the desired shade is achieved.
- Rinse thoroughly after dyeing.
Notes:
- The water used for rinsing and oxidation does not need to be dechlorinated. For best results, prepare 30 to 40 times the weight of your fibre in clean water for the oxidation and rinsing stages. Final colour depth will vary depending on the fibre type, vat condition, number of dips, and dyeing technique.

- Sodium Hydrosulfite or Oak Tree Ash Lye
