Kakishibu is a traditional Japanese dye made from unripe persimmons, producing beautiful orange-brown to rich earthy brown tones on natural fibres.
Used in Japan for over 800 years, Kakishibu was originally introduced from China and has become one of Japan's most distinctive natural dye materials.
Rich in natural tannins, Kakishibu is prized not only for its warm, rustic colours but also for its natural water-resistant, antibacterial, and preservative properties.
Traditionally, it has been used to protect textiles, wood, paper, and Shibugami - the handmade stencil paper used in Japanese katazome dyeing.
This powdered form allows you to prepare your own Kakishibu solution, making it ideal for textile artists, natural dyers, and craftspeople exploring authentic Japanese dyeing techniques.
Dyeing Instructions:
- Add the Kakishibu powder to warm water.
- Stir gently for 3 minutes until fully dissolved.
- Leave the solution to stand for 3 to 4 hours before use.
- Immerse your pre-wetted yarn or fabric into the dye bath, ensuring it is fully saturated.
- Gently move the fibres throughout the dyeing process for even colour absorption.
- Remove the fibres and allow them to oxidise and dry. The colour will continue to develop and deepen as it is exposed to air and sunlight.
- Once the desired colour has developed, rinse thoroughly and allow to dry completely.
Notes:
- Kakishibu naturally deepens in colour over time through oxidation and exposure to sunlight. Multiple dye baths or repeated dips can produce richer, darker shades. Final colour will vary depending on the fibre type, concentration, dyeing time, and environmental conditions. We recommend testing on a small sample before dyeing your full project.
