Aikuma Natural Dyes (Kuchinashi)
This professional material is used by the Handmayk Studio in workshops and production. To make it accessible for sampling and small projects, it has been repackaged by Handmayk into smaller quantities.
IMPORTANT: Product images are for reference purposes only. You will receive 100g of Kuchinashi repackaged in an unlabelled plastic container. Original manufacturer packaging is not included.
Kuchinashi is the Japanese name for Gardenia (Gardenia jasminoides), a flowering shrub that has been used as a natural yellow dye for centuries.
The fruit of the Gardenia plant contains crocin, a natural pigment that produces beautiful shades of bright yellow to golden yellow on textiles.
Traditionally used in Japanese dyeing, Kuchinashi is prized for its vibrant colour and has also been used throughout history as a natural food colouring and medicinal plant.
It produces clear, luminous yellows that can be modified with different mordants and over-dyed with indigo to create a range of beautiful green shades.
Ideal for textile artists, natural dyers, and makers looking to explore the vibrant colours of traditional Japanese botanical dyes.
Dyeing Instructions:
- Crush the Gardenia fruit lightly before use to help release the colour.
- Place the dye into a pot of water and bring to a gentle simmer.
- Simmer for 15 to 20 minutes to extract the dye.
- Strain the liquid through a fine cloth or sieve to remove the plant material.
- Dye your prepared fibres using the extracted dye bath.
Notes:
- Kuchinashi works best on fibres that have been properly mordanted. The final colour will vary depending on the fibre type, mordant used, water quality, and dyeing conditions. We recommend testing on a small sample before dyeing your full project.
