Aikuma Natural Dyes (Yasyadama)
This professional material is used by the Handmayk Studio in workshops and production. To make it accessible for sampling and small projects, it has been repackaged by Handmayk into smaller quantities.

Yashadama is a traditional Japanese natural dye made from the small seed cones of the Japanese Alder, a deciduous tree long valued for its exceptionally high tannin content.
Comprising approximately 40% tannin, these cones have been used for centuries to produce rich, dark colours in natural dyeing.
The use of Yashadama dates back more than a thousand years and is even mentioned in the Manyoshu, Japan's oldest surviving anthology of poetry.
Traditionally, it has been prized for creating deep brown to black shades, particularly when combined with an iron mordant.
Rich in natural tannins, Yashadama is also an excellent choice for natural dyers working with cellulose fibres, where tannins play an important role in the mordanting process.
Ideal for textile artists and natural dyers seeking authentic Japanese dye materials with a long cultural history.
Dyeing Instructions:
- Place the Yashadama into a pot of water.
- Bring to a boil and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes to extract the dye.
- Strain the liquid through a fine cloth or sieve to remove the plant material.
- Use the extracted dye bath to dye your prepared fibres.
- For deep brown to black shades, use with an iron mordant.
Notes:
- Final colour will vary depending on fibre type, mordant, water quality, and dyeing conditions. We recommend testing on a small sample before dyeing your full project.
