Indigo is one of the oldest and most celebrated natural dyes in history.

For thousands of years, it was the world's primary source of blue, producing colours ranging from delicate sky blue to rich navy and almost black.

Derived from plants of the Indigofera genus, Organic Indigo undergoes a traditional fermentation and extraction process before being carefully dried into a concentrated natural dye.

Dharma's Organic Indigo is 100% Indigoid and is Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) Certified, producing deeper blues with fewer dips than many traditional indigo powders.

Unlike most natural dyes, indigo does not bond directly with the fibre.

Instead, it develops its colour through oxidation, gradually turning from yellow-green to blue as it reacts with air.

Organic Indigo is ideal for traditional indigo dyeing, Shibori, tie-dye, batik, and other resist dyeing techniques.

Dyeing Instructions:

  • Prepare an indigo vat using your preferred reduction method.
  • Fully dissolve and reduce the indigo before dyeing.
  • Dip the fibre into the vat for several minutes before removing it.
  • Allow the fibre to oxidise in the air until it turns blue.
  • Repeat the dipping process to gradually build deeper shades.

Notes:

  • Indigo develops its colour through oxidation rather than direct dye absorption. Multiple dips produce progressively darker blues while maintaining the same undertone.
