Inspired by the black-lipped oyster - slow to form, rare, and deeply layered - this work mirrors the long waiting inherent in pearl diving: days at sea, repeated dives, uncertain reward.
The depth and weight of the composition reflect perseverance through hardship, honouring the discipline and emotional endurance of coastal communities whose livelihoods depended on the sea.
Artist's Bio
Eline Roelevink is a Dutch textile artist, specialised in tufting as a sculptural, storytelling medium.
Through richly textured wall hangings, she creates artworks that invite the viewer to slow down, look closer, and feel.
Inspired by nature’s organic forms and rhythms, her works translate elements such as shells and natural structures into layered fibre compositions.
Raised surfaces, tonal transitions, and soft yet architectural forms give her pieces a strong physical presence, blurring the line between art object and environment.
Roelevink approaches tufting as more than a decorative technique - it becomes a narrative tool.
Each artwork is developed as a story, shaped by material, texture, and movement, encouraging an intimate, sensory interaction.
The works are often described as four-dimensional: they reveal themselves not only visually, but through touch and proximity.
Working primarily with hand-tufted fibres, she explores depth, shadow, and softness to create sculptural wall pieces that feel both grounded and fluid.
Her practice reflects a deep appreciation for craftsmanship, materiality, and the emotional power of texture.
