Aikuma Traditional Japanese Natural Dyes (Binrouji)
Binrouji is a traditional natural dye made from the dried seeds of the Betel Nut Palm (Areca catechu), a species native to tropical regions stretching from India to Southeast Asia.
Introduced to Japan during the Nara period (710 to 794), Binrouji has a long history of use in both traditional dyeing and herbal medicine.
It produces rich, earthy tones and is particularly valued for its good lightfastness, allowing dyed textiles to retain their colour better than many other botanical dyes.
A favourite among traditional Japanese dyers, Binrouji is ideal for creating warm, natural shades and exploring authentic Japanese dyeing techniques.
Dyeing Instructions:
- Simmer the Binrouji in water to extract the dye.
- Strain the liquid through a fine cloth or sieve to remove the plant material.
- Dye your prepared fibres using the extracted dye bath.
Notes:
- Binrouji works best on fibres that have been properly mordanted. The final colour will vary depending on the fibre type, mordant used, water quality, and dyeing conditions. We recommend testing on a small sample before dyeing your full project.
